Tromsø: Arctic Architecture and the Northern Lights

Tromsø is often described as the “Gateway to the Arctic.” Located about 220 miles north of the Arctic Circle, it has long served as a departure point for explorers, hunters and scientists traveling farther into the polar regions. Today, however, many visitors come for another reason: Tromsø is one of the world’s best-known destinations for seeing the northern lights.



My visit occurred during the Arctic summer, when the long hours of daylight make it impossible to see the aurora outdoors. Nevertheless, I experienced Tromsø’s most famous attraction through a planetarium presentation and visited the city’s most recognizable landmark, the Arctic Cathedral. Together, these two destinations provided a fitting introduction to the character of northern Norway.

The Arctic Cathedral stands across the Tromsø Sound from the city center, where its sharply angled white roof rises against the mountains. Although commonly called a cathedral, it is officially Tromsdalen Church, a Lutheran parish church. Designed by Norwegian architect Jan Inge Hovig and completed in 1965, the building seems perfectly suited to its surroundings. Its steep triangular forms have been compared to icebergs, mountain peaks and traditional Arctic tents.

The exterior is dramatic, but the interior has a quieter effect. Light enters through the building’s tall windows and emphasizes the clean lines and relative simplicity of the sanctuary. The dominant feature is the enormous glass mosaic titled The Return of Christ. Added in 1972, it fills much of the eastern wall with vivid color. The combination of concrete, glass and northern light makes the church feel modern without losing its sense of reverence.

 

My second destination was the planetarium at the Science Centre of Northern Norway. Its full-dome presentation offered the closest available opportunity to experience the northern lights during the bright Arctic summer. Images of auroras spread across the overhead dome, creating the sensation of looking upward into a dark winter sky.

 

The presentation also helped explain what produces this extraordinary display. Electrically charged particles released by the sun travel toward Earth and interact with gases in the upper atmosphere. Guided toward the polar regions by Earth’s magnetic field, these collisions create shifting curtains and ribbons of green, red and violet light.

Tromsø’s location beneath the auroral oval makes it especially favorable for viewing the phenomenon. From roughly September through March, visitors travel here hoping for dark skies, clear weather and sufficient solar activity. The aurora can never be guaranteed, which makes an actual sighting even more memorable. Tromsø has turned this natural advantage into a major part of its identity, offering nighttime excursions by bus, boat, snowmobile and even dog sled.

The planetarium could not reproduce the cold air, silence and anticipation of waiting beneath a real Arctic sky. It did, however, show me why the northern lights have fascinated scientists, residents and travelers for generations.
